Straw Hats in History

Straw hats aren’t exactly new news. Believe it or not, folks were rocking them way back in ancient Greece and Rome! They began as Greek sailor hats (Source: Pileus | Felt, Wool & Cloth | Britannica) Back then, they were more about keeping cool than looking cool, but hey, sun protection is always a good idea.

Fast forward a few centuries, and straw hats were popping up in all sorts of famous paintings. By the 17th century, they were a common sight in fields across Europe. The 19th century saw straw hats take a leap in popularity. Enter the Panama hat, even though it actually came from Ecuador (don’t tell Panama!). Straw Hats in Modern History

Then came the early 20th century, and things got interesting. President Theodore Roosevelt, one stylish dude, rocked a Panama hat during a visit to the Panama Canal. Suddenly, everyone wanted one! Straw hats went from farmhand essential to fashion must-have. Movie stars and fancy folks started sporting them everywhere, and the straw hat became a symbol of looking sharp under the sun.
